"Bird in a Gilded Cage", a serigraph hand signed by Erté, based on an Erté illustration for Richard Le Galliene's novel, “There Was a Ship", serialized in Harper's Bazaar in 1929. Two "birds" appear in this image: one a regal cock with a red plume, the other a mysterious princess, draped in flowing, violet silk. The exquisite princess, lavished with jewels, is honored for her beauty but also subject to her "golden cage". Her skirt and the bracelets that decorate her arm and ankle are accented with silver foil and jewels, while the jewel box proffered by her kneeling servant glistens with copper foil. The background of the graphic is a warm tan hue, the interior of the cage a rich navy, and the moon that rises behind it is black.
